First Time Home Buying and Proud of It
While growing up in the Central Oregon area and renting several apartments for the last eight years, I anticipated that I would eventually purchase my own home to share with my newly started family. My name is Daniel and along with my wife, Heather, and two year old daughter, Grace, we were able to make that dream a reality this last June.
To start, I really did not think that we could buy our first house until many years down the road. We did not think that we could afford a house here in Central Oregon and even looked at several other areas to live. We figured that we would need to get some more money saved and pay off several bills before we even thought about buying. Very early in 2007, we were informed that the housing market was shifting to a buyer's market, but they did not know how long it would remain that way. This, for us, meant that there was more chance to negotiate on the prices. So, we started gathering information on purchasing a home, and believe me, there is a lot of information and classes out there if you look. We came to a huge turning point in deciding to buy a house when we talked to our mortgage company and got pre-qualified. Just knowing our price range and some of the first time home buyer programs that are out there really helped to know which houses we wanted to look at.
Although we found the house that we purchased through our own searching, we were sure to get the help of a realtor very quickly since we really needed the knowledge and experience they offer. We made an offer about mid-April and we were moving into our new home by the end of May.
It is a whole new and wonderful experience to have a home now. Although it has not been without obstacles to overcome, the sense of having the responsibility and having that ownership is great. Even just the ability to make improvements inside and outside the house is awesome. It makes us look at other people's homes differently too. We notice and appreciate what other people have done to their homes (it gives us ideas for the improvements we can make). We are always taking pictures of the changes we have made to show our friends, family, and realtor. I feel like a teen that is showing off the upgrades on his car to his friends, only, I am showing off my house. Not that the house is spectacular, but it is ours and the improvements are a reflection of who we are and the efforts or struggles we have gone through.
